December 4-5, 2024

Extended Registration Deadline: 11/08/24

U.S. Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Center Stakeholder Forum

The second hybrid U.S. Greenhouse Gas Center Stakeholder Forum will inform the Center’s future activities and identify opportunities for the Center to: 1) lower barriers to near-term climate action; 2) identify greenhouse gas information and services needed to inform mid- and long-term action; and 3) communicate about ongoing center efforts and opportunities for engagement. We also aim to identify geographies and sectors where information about greenhouse gas emissions and sinks and carbon stocks are already sufficient to enable more ambitious and rapid action. The Forum will also strengthen connections among diverse stakeholders, with each other and with the Center.

LOGISTICS

Dates: December 4-5, 2024.

Location: College Park, Maryland. The NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction. Due to space limitations, in-person registration will be capped. You will be notified of your acceptance for in-person attendance once registration has closed.

Hybrid option: There will be a hybrid option for remote forum participation, anyone who requests in-person attendance but cannot be accommodated due to space constraints will be automatically registered for the remote option.

STRUCTURE

Much of the Forum will consist of opportunities for discussion and engagement including via breakout sessions, panel discussions, and informal learning activities. These sessions may include thematic areas such as carbon markets; research; greenhouse gas inventories; corporate action; scope 3 emissions; and infrastructure failures. Breakouts may also focus on specific user communities such as state natural resources agencies and corporations. Interactive sessions will be devoted to stakeholder input, guided by specific questions designed to elicit stakeholders’ priority needs and actions the Center could take to meet them.

We will solicit feedback on the types of information and support that the Center can provide – such as data sets, synthesis products, convenings, and technical support – that will help stakeholders individually and collectively take action to manage greenhouse gas emissions and removals. We will also provide an update on the Center's pilot phase activities over the past year.

BACKGROUND

The U.S. Greenhouse Gas Center was established in 2023 to advance efforts to meet climate mitigation goals by improving the quality, completeness, transparency, and accessibility of greenhouse gas information needed for decision-making in support of the National Strategy to Advance an Integrated U.S. Greenhouse Gas Measurement, Monitoring, and Information System (GHGMMIS). It is currently coordinated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) with further partnerships to be announced prior to the forum.

Engagement with stakeholders is core to the Center’s mission and is designed to:

  1. Identify users’ primary needs for data and information about greenhouse gas emissions and removals;

  2. Inform the Center about users’ associated support needs including for capacity building, training, and investment;

  3. Guide development and delivery of information and data products; and,

  4. Inform dissemination of those products using an open science data portal.

You can visit the Center’s website which contains an online portal at www.earth.gov/ghgcenter. If you have any programmatic questions, please reach out to the help desk. Your question will be distributed to the appropriate POC by discipline expertise.
